About Glaucoma

Open-Angle Glaucoma

The most common type. Gradual increase in eye pressure damages the optic nerve. Often symptomless until significant vision is lost.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Sudden or gradual blockage of fluid drainage. Can cause rapid vision loss with pain and nausea. A medical emergency when acute.

Neuroprotection

A major research focus — treatments that protect the optic nerve directly, beyond just lowering eye pressure. Multiple clinical trials are ongoing.

Frequently Asked Questions

MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) uses tiny devices to improve fluid drainage from the eye with less risk than traditional surgery. Several new MIGS devices are being studied in UK trials.

Yes. Neuroprotection trials study oral medications, gene therapy, and neuroregenerative approaches that protect the optic nerve directly, independent of eye pressure reduction.

Some trials specifically target patients with existing vision loss, aiming to preserve remaining vision or even restore some function through neuroprotection or regenerative approaches.
