Paid Clinical Research

Everything you need to know about participating in compensated clinical studies as a healthy volunteer.

What is Paid Clinical Research?

Before new medicines can be prescribed, they must be tested for safety in healthy volunteers. These Phase 1 and bioequivalence trials are strictly regulated and compensate you for your time — typically between £500 and £3,000 per study.

You receive a free full health screening (blood tests, ECG, physical exam), all meals and accommodation during your stay, and 24/7 qualified medical supervision.

Types of Paid Studies

Phase 1 Healthy Volunteer

First-in-human trials testing new medicines for safety and tolerability. Healthy adults aged 18–55 typically. Involves staying at a clinical unit for 1–4 nights with follow-up visits over several weeks.

£1,000 – £3,000+ per study

Bioequivalence Studies

Comparing generic medicines to branded versions to confirm they work the same way. Shorter stays, often weekend-based. Multiple short visits over 2–4 weeks.

£500 – £2,000 per study

Patient-Specific Trials

Some therapeutic-area trials compensate patients for their time and travel. Eligibility depends on your specific diagnosis, current treatment, and disease stage.

Varies — travel + time covered

Early Phase / First-in-Class

Novel treatments being tested for the first time. Longer stays with more intensive monitoring. Higher compensation reflects the greater time commitment.

£2,000 – £5,000+ per study

Common Questions

Is paid clinical research safe?

All UK trials must be approved by the MHRA and an NHS Research Ethics Committee. Phase 1 units are staffed 24/7 by qualified medical professionals. You can withdraw at any time without penalty.

Who can participate?

Most Phase 1 studies require healthy adults aged 18–55, non-smokers or light smokers, within a healthy BMI range, not taking regular medication. Some studies have broader criteria.

Will I need to stay overnight?

Many studies involve overnight stays ranging from 1 night to 2 weeks. Some are outpatient with scheduled visits. All stays include private rooms, meals, WiFi, and entertainment.

How and when do I get paid?

Compensation is typically paid by bank transfer within 2–4 weeks of completing the study. The exact amount and schedule is confirmed before you consent.

Can I withdraw from a study?

Yes — you can withdraw from any clinical trial at any time without giving a reason. You'll still be compensated proportionally for the time you participated.

What about my GP?

The research unit will ask for your GP details so they can notify them of your participation and any findings from the health screening.

What does the health screening involve?

A full medical check including blood tests (liver, kidney, blood count), ECG (heart tracing), blood pressure, urine sample, physical examination, and a review of your medical history. This is completely free and you get the results.

Where are the research units?

Major UK units include Quotient Sciences (Nottingham), Parexel (London), Simbec-Orion (South Wales), and Richmond Pharmacology (London). Many are located near major teaching hospitals.
