Active neovascular disease

Standard: Intravitreal anti-VEGF injections (Aflibercept, Ranibizumab, Faricimab)

Wet AMD — Extended

Less frequent dosing

Standard: Port delivery system, high-dose Aflibercept, or Faricimab

Dry AMD / GA

Geographic atrophy

Standard: Pegcetacoplan (Syfovre) or Avacincaptad (first GA treatments)

About Macular Degeneration

Wet AMD

Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, causing rapid vision loss. Anti-VEGF injections can stop progression and often improve vision.

Dry AMD

Gradual breakdown of the macula. More common but slower progression. Until recently there were no treatments — new complement inhibitors are changing this.

Geographic Atrophy

Advanced form of dry AMD with distinct areas of cell loss. The first treatments (Pegcetacoplan, Avacincaptad) were approved in 2023-2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard anti-VEGF treatment starts with monthly loading doses (3 injections), then moves to every 4-12 weeks depending on response. Clinical trials are testing treatments requiring less frequent injections.

Yes. Pegcetacoplan (Syfovre) and Avacincaptad pegol are the first approved treatments for geographic atrophy (advanced dry AMD). Several other treatments are in clinical trials.

The port delivery system (Susvimo) is a small implant placed in the eye during surgery that continuously releases Ranibizumab. It reduces injection frequency from every 1-2 months to refill procedures every 6 months.
