Long COVID Research
Long COVID affects an estimated 2 million people in the UK. Clinical trials are testing anti-inflammatory drugs, antivirals, exercise rehabilitation programmes, and cognitive behavioural approaches. The NHS England Long COVID trial programme is one of the largest research efforts globally, with multiple studies recruiting through GP practices and specialist clinics.
HIV Treatment and Prevention
While HIV is now a manageable chronic condition, trials continue to pursue a cure and improved prevention. UK HIV trials are testing long-acting injectable antiretrovirals (monthly or bi-monthly dosing instead of daily pills), broadly neutralising antibodies for both treatment and prevention, and gene editing approaches (CRISPR) aimed at eliminating latent HIV from cells.
Hepatitis C Elimination and Beyond
The UK aims to eliminate hepatitis C as a public health concern. Direct-acting antivirals cure over 95% of cases, but trials continue to test shorter treatment courses, retreatment options for rare failures, and approaches for patients co-infected with HIV. Hepatitis B trials are exploring functional cure strategies using RNA interference and immune modulators.
